1. Tam Coc

Tam Coc located in Van Lam alley, Hoa Lu district, Ninh Binh Vietnam and Tam Coc means Three Caves, also known as “through water”, including “Hang Ca” – first cave, “Hang Hai” – second cave and “Hang Ba” – thirst cave. All three caves are created by the Ngo Dong river drilled through the mountain. This place away from Ninh Binh city about 10km, with 15min by driving car, easy to get the taxi or motor-bike from city center. You can check in this destination from 7:00 Am to 18:00 – every day, upon arrive Tam Coc, you have to buy the ticket for entry and boat trip at ticket counter in harbor.

The ticket is for one person, but there are 2 seats available on boat, therefore if you go alone, you have waiting for sharing boat with someone else, or if not, in the case you need more private, you have to buy 2 boat tickets for getting whole boat of one small sampan (a little boat).

Best time to visit Tam Coc

You can travel to Tam Coc in all seasons all year round, but there are a few periods that are considered the most beautiful seasons of this area.

There are many festivals in Ninh Binh in early year (Jan to April) and the weather is cool so you can combine sightseeing at pagodas, participating in festivals and rowing boats to visit Tam Coc.

May to early July is best time to go (solar calendar) – the rice season and golden rice harvest in the fields of Tam Coc – Bich Dong, creating a beautiful picture.

From mid of July to mid of August is hot and monsoon, but still nice view.

From Sep to December is less temperature and also good time to go with second rice season.

Tam Coc Boat Trip

With 2 hours boat ride along Ngo Dong river, when you seating on small boat, the boat driver paddling by hand, transfer you along Ngo Dong river, along the way through mountains and crossing 3 caves and temple then return to harbor.

2. Bich Dong

Bich Dong pagoda (means pagoda inside cave) was build in 1773 by Nguyen Nghiem (the father of the great poet Nguyen Du) when He visited the cave. Looking at the panoramic view of mountains, caves, rivers, fields, the sky here is covered with an overwhelming blue color. Bich Dong has been called “Nam Thien De Nhi Dong” (the second most beautiful cave in the South Heaven).

Bich Dong Pagoda was formed in 1428, at the beginning of the Later Le Dynasty, as a small temple on the top of the mountain.

In 1705, two monks Tri Kien and Tri The from Nghia Hung district, Nam Dinh province met and became brothers. The two monks were both devout and wanted to travel to many places to spread Buddhism and build temples.

Coming here, seeing that Bich Dong Mountain has a beautiful terrain and already has a pagoda, the two monks decided to stop, repair the old pagoda themselves, and collect donations to rebuild it into 3 pagodas: Ha, Trung and Thuong to to lead a religious life.

In 1707, two monks Tri Kien and Tri The cast a large bell, which is still hanging in Dark Cave.
